The Modular Building Institute (MBI) hosts an annual contest and awards ceremony to give recognition on a variety of noteworthy modular construction projects. In 2024, Aster Place won the “Best of Show” category.

Aster Place is a multi-storey Supportive Housing project that was built by Tasu Construction, in collaboration with ROC Modular as the module manufacturer. The building is now home to 40 residents in independent suites, and features common spaces, laundry facilities, storage, a commercial-grade kitchen, medical rooms, and outdoor amenities. The first floor includes a variety of spaces for resident support programs, and the top two floors contain the resident units. The support programs include life-skills training, employment assistance, recovery services, counselling and more. This project is part of a British Columbia initiative to provide citizens with stable and affordable housing, as well as social services. The program is called “Building BC” and is made possible by the allocation of $1.2 billion over the next 10 years, in an effort to provide an additional 2,500 homes to those in need.
To accelerate the project timeline and minimize costs, modular units were manufactured offsite by ROC Modular and transported to Richmond for assembly and installation by Tasu Construction. Tasu spearheaded all on-site planning and development aspects, from permitting and applications to mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire safety systems.
Aster Place is a great example of how modular construction can speed up timelines while reducing costs, to ensure that citizens of British Columbia have quicker access to affordable and stable housing.
